Re: ~Taxidermy Art~ - also when handling butterflies, be very careful. It is the "dust" on the wings that gives them the colour and it easily comes off on your hands . or anything that touches them...

Re: ~Taxidermy Art~ - the DIY tribe always has some interesting responses http://do-it-yourself.tribe.net/ and I agree about there not being much on butterflies to rot -- once they are dry they are dry, but sometimes beetles/bugs like to eat the dried creatures, so there may be a way to treat them to be less snacky....

Re: ~Taxidermy Art~ - I would imagine there's not much on a butterfly that can rot, particularly if you're buying it. Dried flowers should be no problem. Maybe you should google "diy taxidermy", though you may come up with some scary links! Maybe try "shadowbox with butterflies."...

~Taxidermy Art~ - Hi, I saw a nice framed blue Morpho butterfly and was wondering if anyone has tried making framed art (which is more complicated than a single mounted speciman in a frame)using actual butterfly specimens (which die naturally in botanical gardens), and dried flowers. A friend of mine likes taxidermy and i would love to make her a keepsake box with a shadowbox-lid that has a nature scene with the iridescent butterfly and maybe preserved pink and yellow flowers any idea on how go go about this? i know absolutely nothing about taxidemy but think that my friend would really like it. Thanks everyone, Petra :)...

Re: Sewing Machine Recomendations.... Anyone? Anyone? - I just came across this neat website, which has sewing machine reviews: http://sewing.patternreview.com/SewingMachine/Reviews...

Re: Sewing Machine Recomendations.... Anyone? Anyone? - I'm with Wind: I've never had problems sewing multiple layers of denim on my early-70s Singer. A friend also has a Denim Pro from Babylock that handles multiple layers of denim with no hiccups, but it's not great for fine work, I've found....

Re: Sewing Machine Recomendations.... Anyone? Anyone? - I think in your shoes I would mount a search for a (used) Kennmore, Brother, or Singer from way back when sewing machines were still made of metal....

Re: I couldn't have done this with you! - flat rate shipping by the USPS is your friend. I sell a lot on ebay and I only use the flat rate boxes. I think they have 5 or 6 sizes by now and also have international flat rates too! No guess work in the shipping and its guaranteed to get there with in 3 days....

Re: I couldn't have done this with you! - That's an issue for me My ex art gallery boss ships really spendy artwork anywhere. He recommends Canada Post Surface Mail. says it's cheapest, & longest time, but time isn't usually as long as they quote, & the stuff ALWAYS gets there. But when I went there for rate info, they want to stuff my clothes into these bubble wrap lined white plastic mailing envelopes. I will not live long enough to count the wrinkles that'll greet my customers! The "nice presentation" not happenin' THAT way!...

Re: I couldn't have done this with you! - Well, keep in mind that shipping costs often include more than just postage. You also need to account for your packaging, time & gas to go to the post office, etc....

Re: I couldn't have done this with you! - check out the sizes of the post office's flat rate boxes to get an idea of how much you can stuff in a box and charge accordingly....

Re: I couldn't have done this with you! - Thanks so much, I'll check out your site right away! I don't know about the shipping stuff, so I'm taking shots in the dark there. Someone told me just to "up" my prices & absorb shipping that way, but as it costs differently to ship to different places, I'm unsure how to proceed. banner is an issue! My logo/company name etc., weren't etsy compatible, so I've got the logo designer working on that, too REALLY appreciate your input! Thanks, & keep it coming ANYTHING that comes to mind! :^)...

Re: I couldn't have done this with you! - Be sure to complete your Shop Policies section -- this covers everything from Payment Methods accepted to shipping time frames to refund/return policies. Better to have those things thought out so you're comfortable with them before you need them. Here are my Shop Policies, to give you an example: http://www.etsy.com/shop_policy.php?user_id=5611328 And just a little note but your banner could use some color/pizazz. Your photos of your products are so beautiful, colorful & vibrant that your banner doesn't do them justice. There are a lot of digital artisans on Etsy that can create one for you, too, at a very fair price, if that's not up your alley....

Re: Sewing Machine Recomendations.... Anyone? Anyone? - Thanks ladies! Hay, that little hump jumper looks great. I'm going to get one. As for what I'm doing . making jeans and jean jackets, draperies, light upholstery work, making weekend/overnight bags and shopping bags, etc. Just things for us. Nothing very heavy duty but definately sturdy stuff. Like I said the several layers of jeans is the big thing. I've found in my past machines if they could handle the jeans they could also handle anything else I wanted them to do including some leathers. The new machines all seem to be for light weight work. Am I the only one that makes jeans anymore? Anyhoo thanks so much! Any other recomendations? Anyone?...

Re: Sewing Machine Recomendations.... Anyone? Anyone? - If it's something you do a lot, an idustrial machine is worth it, but even then, when you're sewing over seams, you can have trouble. This little tool is amazing! http://www.sewforless.com/item/The_Hump_Jumper/5367/c43 Simple little piece of plastic, but it really helps when you're crossing seams!...

Re: Sewing Machine Recomendations.... Anyone? Anyone? - I don't know about denim, but I have been very sucessful using my mom's Huskvarna machine for doing multiple layers of upholstry fabric for costuming. Right now I have a Costco Singer machine and it works pretty well with thick layers, though I suspect it just wouldn't have that extra "umph" for getting through thick layers as Kathleen mentioned, you would need a decent motor. I don't know how gigantic a project you're doing but I've also had great success by using an awl to pre-poke the layers on some of my projects (like leather and super thick canvas) and then carefully sewing them on the machine through the holes. Mind you this was for small projects though, and it was a little time consuming....

Re: Sewing Machine Recomendations.... Anyone? Anyone? - To sew multiple layers of denim, you'll need a big motor to push the needle through. An industrial machine is the only thing I know that can do that. To sew leather, a walking foot is helpful. Leather can crawl miserably and a walking foot can help with this because the top and bottom move at the same time. You can sometimes get used industrial machines at sewing machine repair places. I love industrial machines and worked on them for years in costume shops. It's hard for me to work on home machines now!...

Sewing Machine Recomendations.... Anyone? Anyone? - I thought my Crafty Vixens would have the answers, so here I am asking for some help .. I'm looking for a sewing machine that's great with sewing multiple layers of denim (for making jeans, jackets etc), canvas and some leathers. I haven't been able to find anything except those huge commercial table machines that need a whole room of their own. I know White used to make Jeans Machines that did everything I want, but I can't find one anywhere. There has to be another machine out there that'll do the work. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Anyone? Anyone?...
